Kidlat Tahimik ’59 receives Gawad Urian Lifetime Achievement Award

Eric “Kidlat Tahimik” de Guia ’59, the father of independent film-making in the Philippines, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Filmmaking by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino in its Gawad Urian rites last October 1.

Kidlat Tahimik is renowned as one of the country’s pioneers in alternative and independent filmmaking, known for his work “Perfumed Nightmates” (Mababangong Bangungot) which since 1977, continues to be screened in art house and alternative cinema circuits around the world and which remains to be a staple in film schools for lectures regarding alternative and third world cinema.

Unknown to many, as a resident brod, Kidlat Tahimik was President of the UP Student Council from 1962 to 1963. Congratulations brod!
