Leonardo V. Alcantara Jr. ’81 is now the Director of the Bureau of Communications Services of the Office of the President’s Government Mass Media Group. He succeeds Eduardo M. Varona ’56 who retired after serving for 18 years as head of the Bureau. The turnover ceremony was held January 5 at the BCS with several government personalities and heads of TV networks as guests. Congratulations brod!

Carlos Miguel O. Fragante ’98 will be graduating from his Masters of Information Systems Management course with distinction (GPA of 3.80 out of 4.00) from Carnegie Mellon University this May 2006! The U.S. News & World Report ranked Carnegie Mellon’s information and technology management graduate program as no. 1 in the US in 2004. Congratulations brod!

The Bantayog ng mga Bayani on December 9 will honor nine men and women for the courage they showed in opposing, at great risk to their lives, the dictatorial government of the late Ferdinand Marcos ’37. Among the nine honorees is Merardo T. Arce ’70, who will be recognized together with Haydee Yorac and Jaime Cardinal Sin among others.

Ceremonies honoring the nine martyrs and heroes will be held on December 9, 3:30 p.m., at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani shrine at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue. The rites will include the unveiling of a section of the Wall of Remembrance on which the names of the nine have been inscribed, adding them to 142 illustrious names which include brods Armando J. Malay ’34 and Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. ’50.

The Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation Inc. was organized in 1986 to nurture the memory of those who have “given their lives for the cause of freedom and justice.” It undertakes research and documentation on the lives of these exemplary Filipinos, building up an archive not likely to be found anywhere else.

Team Philippines composed of Evan Grabador ’04 [backstroke], Timmy Chua ’02 [breaststroke], together with teammates James Walsh [butterfly] and Miguel Molina [freestyle] won the bronze medal in the men’s 4x100m medley finals. Congrats brods!

Raphael “Timmy” Chua ’02 took home the bronze medal in the men’s 100m breast finals of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games at the Trace Aquatics Center in Los Banos last November 30. Chua came out strong in the first 50 meters of the event while battling 2003 SEA Games silver winner Vorrawuti Aumpiwan of Thailand. But Vietnam’s Huu Viet Nguyen came surging from the eighth lane to take the gold. Nguyen, bronze winner in 2003, clocked 1:03.80 for the gold, followed by Aumpiwan who timed 1:04.01, while Chua came in at 1:04.35. Congratulations brod!
